Rent

Seeing as how this is based off the Broadway musical of the same name, and I'm not overly fond of musicals, I should have known better on my way in to see this movie. To be honest, I didn't really want to see it, but my room-mate was going, and I wanted to get out of the house for a little while, so I went along just because. It started out okay, I suppose. The opening scenes and songs were nice, and fairly entertaining...But then, as the movie continues on, you come to the horrifying realization that the movie is 95% song, with VERY few spoken lines at all. The songs are literally 30 seconds apart, in some places.

After seeing it, a few people asked me what it was about...I honestly have no idea what it's about, after seeing it, because it was just way too much singing and dancing to get my attention. There were 4 or 5 spots where the movie could and should have ended, but then it came back on for what felt like another hour, each time. The movie was only two hours long, but it was an agonizing experience that just seemed to last all day long. I kept praying for the ending, and getting nothing...

The title of this movie pretty much says it all. If you're going to have to watch it, make sure you rent it, because it isn't worth the $20 to buy it when it's eventually out on DVD or the $10 to get a movie ticket for it. Luckily it was a matinee and only $3.50 for my ticket, but even so...I'd have rather spent the two hours doing just about anything else.

Alright. I can admit that if you read my last review for Rent, it wasn't that kind. So, after being challenged to actually sit through the entire thing, I accepted and got a little bit of a different view of this movie other than just gay dudes, aids and diet coke.

The movie, if you were wondering, is about living life to the fullest, and follows what I called "dead beat artists" who haven't paid any rent in a year to their land lord. It deals with their relationships and how they interact, and their struggles with drugs, aids, death, and of course paying rent. If you're not into musicals, this movie is not for you. There's about 5 minutes total of actual dialogue. Eventually the music is so constant that your brain doesn't even register that, and it's almost like your watching a foreign film but you can understand the weird language that's being spoken. All and all it was not a bad movie, the only beef is the insesant singing and the occasional awkward fag scene...like the drag queen Santa singing and dancing on a table"...But it's a Broadway musical, so what do you expect?

If you are into musicals, this is the cream of the crop. If you are not into musicals, stay away from this movie at all costs. If you dont know about musicals but want to see what all the hype is about, take someone with you who has seen the original Broadway play and has some insight into the scenes so you too can maybe get a little bit more appreciation for this sort of thing. Special thanks to the pesron that did that for me. You rock!

Meh...

Rent it if you want, but keep an open mind. It's a date movie if ever there was one.

Blegh!

Don't even bother renting this piece of crap unless you REALLY like musicals.
