Underworld: Evolution

Alright first off. I hated Underworld because I was expecting crazy werewolf vampire action, and I got a messed up gothic Romeo and Juliet. But from the snippets of 2 that I saw, it looked really good.

Boy oh boy. this movie isn't really a sequel. It's more of a continuation. I don't consider it to be a seperate entity like say the Predator movies would be. This thing picks up exactly where the first left off, so if you haven't seen the first or are unfamiliar with the characters because it's been so long, you will have no idea what the hell is going on. So watch the first one as a refresher. This movie gets right into the continuing story--it does a recap but not a very good one. All I have to say is this movie is a gothic dungeons and dragons players wet dream. So much is going on with the characters it's very hard to follow where the story is progressing, and in what direction. And there are so many plot holes, which make it even more confusing. Scenes that should of had more emphasis didn't, and some of the dialogue ended up being hypocritical to the story.

The only great part about this movie is if you were wondering where all the action was in the first like I was, it got all slammed in this movie. Because the plot was so heavy in the first one, they fell back on the action aspect in 2. That's about the only thing that kept me watching throughout the whole movie: waiting to see when the next head was gonna get ripped off.

And what was up with the guns? Why are they even present in this movie? They seem to serve no purpose. They barely affect any of the characters other then to watch them giggle around when they get hit. The only time they are ever affective is at the directors discretion, and that is hardly ever. Every character that died did not do so by a gun...it was bare handed fist fighting, or swords...

All and all its just a movie that takes itself way to seriously.

I'm a huge fan of the first Underworld movie, so obviously I went into this one expecting a great experience. There were a few slight changes in the general style from the first movie, and I noticed a few little inconsistencies here and there, but overall, I definitely wasn't disappointed.

First off, if you haven't seen the first one, it's probably not a good idea to go and see this one. This sequel literally takes place right where the first one left off. After the flashback sequence to medieval times at the beginning, the first scene we see takes place probably about an hour or so after the first movie ended, if that, which I thought was pretty cool. If you're unfamiliar with the plot line of the first movie, the basic summary is that there's an ancient war that's been going on for centuries between vampires and werewolves (know as Lycans). There's more to it than that, but that's the basic outline of it.

Evolution builds off of the events that take place in the first, and then expand out into what happens after Markus wakes up. I won't go into storyline details because I don't want to write spoilers, though. The actions sequences are what really shine in this movie. There are some absolutely amazing fights between the different creatures (which, by the way, look absolutely incredible), and it really does a great job at keeping you into the movie. And there's a LOT of blood and gore going on all throughout, as well. It was just incredibly entertaining to watch. And besides that, Kate Beckinsale couldn't possibly be any hotter in a tight black leather suit...

The only downside is that you absolutely have to have seen the first to be able to understand what's going on with the story. Other than that, it's a great movie and I recommend checking it out if you're into action movies and the vampire/werewolf genre. Or if you just want a movie that's incredibly violent and gory that's actually got a good block of story to back it up.

Meh...

If you love Underworld, you'll love this one. If you didn't really like it, you finally get to see werewolves and vampires duking it out, if you can get past the extremely plot hole filled confusing story line. C+ for good effort.

Great!

I loved it. Definitely check it out if you're into vampire/werewolf movies, but only if you've seen the first.
